Frequently asked questions

What is happening at the intersection of S.R. 85 and S.R. 123?
A $25.6 million construction project began in August 2009 at the S.R. 85/123 interchange. The main focus of work includes constructing a new flyover ramp to connect S.R. 85 northbound to S.R. 123. S.R. 85 is also being widened to six lanes between General Bond Boulevard to the entrance of the Northwest Florida Regional Airport, and the access to the Northwest Florida Regional Airport is being improved.

Are there any plans to widen S.R. 123 or construct another flyover at the north S.R. 85/123 intersection to help facilitate traffic to and from the Crestview area?
At present, funding for improvements along S.R. 123 is not available. The community’s transportation priorities are determined by the Okaloosa-Walton Transportation Planning Organization (TPO). Proposed construction projects are then placed in the FDOT Five Year Work Plan according to the TPO priority. When funds are available the projects are constructed.

Improving traffic flow on S.R. 123 and north of the S.R. 85/123 intersection is a high priority project for the TPO. Citizen participation plays a major role in the TPO identification and prioritization process. For more information on the work of the Okaloosa-Walton TPO you may call (800) 226-8914, or visit their website.

How much will the project cost and who is paying for it?

How long will it take to complete the work?
Construction activities began in August 2009 and the project is scheduled for completion by the fall of 2012.

Will there be any traffic impacts during construction period?
A construction project of this magnitude and complexity will sometimes impact traffic.  Drivers may encounter lane shifts and periodic lane restrictions.  FDOT and its’ consultants will endeavor to limit traffic impacts whenever possible.  You are encouraged to visit this website regularly for the latest traffic advisories.

Why can’t these projects be done at night so as to not interfere with traffic?
Much of the work will be performed at night. No lane closures will be permitted on S.R. 85 northbound between 7 a.m. and 8:30 p.m., or on S.R. 85 southbound between 6 a.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Who is responsible for the construction work?
The project is administered by the Florida Department of Transportation, District Three.  Greenhorne & O’Mara, Inc. of Fort Walton Beach is providing construction engineering and inspection service in support of FDOT. The construction contractor is Anderson Columbia of Lake City, Fla.
